Recent Auction Highlights

8 November, 2010 - Sparks Auctions Ltd.

This latest Sparks Auction offered a huge selection of Canadian stamps, with strength in all areas from Classics to Modern. Many well centered NH examples were offered in the key area of interest to collectors, which include the Small Queens to the Scroll set in the 1920s. We noted 165 lots of Early Beavers in the Healy Pass Collection, a large group of stamps cancelled with “C” for House of Commons, a number of beautifully dated stamps and misperfs and finally, large numbers of modern varieties.

Here are a few of the more interesting stamps:

Lot 206
Scott 1
Catalogue $1,000
Realized $2,200

Lot 224
Scott 5
Catalogue $1,500
Realized $2,200

Lot 232
Scott 8
Catalogue $700
Realized $400

"House of Commons" Cancellations

Lot 294
Scott 35
Estimate $40
Realized $120

Lot 295
Scott 35/44
Estimate $100
Realized $90

There were many other similar cancellations for the subsequent sets…very interesting as we seldom see these cancellations.

20¢ Edward VII –A Very Rare Pair

Lot 405
Scott 84
Catalogue $300
Realized $725

1¢ Admiral - No previous record

Lot 454
Unitrade 105e
Catalogue $180
Realized $210

We find it hard to believe that we have no previous record of a Unitrade 105e at auction either in our pricing records or in our research files. This is the 1¢ lemon yellow Admiral wet printing, Die I. There are undoubtedly copies out there, but none that are in VF NH condition have come to our attention. We find this very strange and congratulate the successful bidder on his wise purchase.

Large Blocks

Lot 649
Scott 1498a
Estimate $19,750
Realized $10,000

Lot 719
Unitrade OX1

Congratulations to Sparks on a most interesting sale.
