Recent Auction Highlights

13 April, 2010 - Harmer's International, Inc.

This auction house, located in Yorktown Heights, NY, held one of its public auctions in March at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City. Most of the 1131 lots were from the U.S., but in the British Commonwealth section, there were 31 individual lots of Canadian stamps.

In our review of these Canadian lots, we identified these three beautiful stamps that any collector would be proud to own:

Lot 828
Scott 4
Catalogue $225
Realized $903

Lot 835
Scott 8
Catalogue $700
Realized $852

Lot 838
Scott 9
Catalogue $3,250
Realized $7251

The first stamp (Scott 4) had unusually wide borders and came from the bottom of the sheet, something we don’t see often. The cancellation is very distinct. It is unusual to see such large borders.

The second stamp (Scott 8) also has generous borders and a beautiful dated postmark from Hamilton.

The third stamp (Scott 9) is the one that impressed us the most. It is one of our favorite stamps that is underpriced in the catalogues. Two years ago another used copy sold at auction for a record price of $8,050, otherwise this would have been a new record. We compared the two and would have chosen this one over the other.

This completes our brief review of the Canadian items. They were quite special and worth noting.

(The prices realized in this sale were converted at the rate of $1 U.S. = $1.0028 Canadian)
