New Record Prices Realised in 2001
The year just finished has seen its share of new record prices. We have recorded 58 which, interestingly, is less than the number of new record prices we counted in 2000, when we recorded 63.
Below are shown the two choicest items we noted, followed by a chart comparing the two years, showing the relative areas of strength amongst the various sets.
Scott 35a
1¢ Small Queen
R. Maresch & Son
Realised $700
Scott 111
5¢ Admiral
Eastern Auctions
Realised $950

As usual, Maresch and Eastern Auctions battled for first place with Vance in third position followed by Kimmerly, Firby and Brigham. When one takes into account how rare the better early material is that they auction and the difficulties of persuading collectors to part with their treasures, it is, in our view, quite an accomplishment to have a sale realising even one record price. We congratulate these auction houses on what they have achieved and their happy clients who received the proceeds from these sales.
