Stamp market commentary
Commentary No. 14 - 17 October, 2000 Fall Auctions Highlights
Recently a gentleman arrived at our office in Montreal and introduced himself as a collector from South Africa. We talked about stamp collecting for a while and he mentioned that it is lonely being a collector because there seems to be so few of us. It was a pleasure to meet him and to talk about our favourite subject. Along these lines, we at Canadian Stamp Auctions hope that this web site will help connect collectors of Canadian stamps where ever they may be.
This fall has seen lots of activity amongst the Canadian auction houses. The increase in the prices being realized for the better material seems to be bringing more and more good material to the market. This commentary will focus on this material, illustrating some of the more interesting examples. We will not know the prices realised for some time, but will post them as soon as they become available.
We have listed only a few of the outstanding stamps that are being offered this fall. If money were no object, one could put together the collection of a lifetime from these seven auctions. But, as always, bidding is a tug of war between the pocket book, the resolution to keep the self-imposed limits one must set before the bidding starts, versus the desire to get the perfect stamp to add to one's collection once the excitement of the bidding is under way. For each of you who is a participant, it is a moment of drama. We wish you the best of luck and hope you will be able to get at least one of these gems!
